Of recent, nonprofits have been making quite a niche for themselves in the blogosphere. Many are using their blogs as a space to express opinions, share ideas, and inform about causes. The appeal of a blog can be explained by its ability to give the once unnoticed nonprofiteer a voice in the world of charity. But perhaps more attractive is the ability for readers to be exposed to the thoughts of great nonprofit leaders. Quickly and easily, one can access a blog on any computer, any time, any day. And it’s free! Admittedly, with the barrage of bloggers online, it is difficult to discern which blog is actually of sound quality. In an effort to help, my colleague and I have put together a list of the best nonprofit blogs for you to peruse.
Blue Avocado – “Practical, provocative and fun food-for-thought for nonprofits”
Striving to appeal to a variety of readers, Blue Avocado is a great compilation blog of thought provoking posts. They also offer themed columns for those seeking specific information, which include “Finance & Strategy,” “Ask Rita in HR,” and a very helpful “Resource Directory.”
CharityLawyer – “Daily dose of nonprofit law”
Everyone in the nonprofit world has struggled with law operations at one time or another. And if you haven’t, consider yourself lucky! CharityLawyer is an amazing resource for not only staying legally informed, but also leveraging nonprofit law to “strengthen the sector as a whole.”
Future Leaders in Philanthropy (FLiP)
For all the future and aspiring nonprofit leaders, FLiP is a must-follow. Their posts are young and fresh, with an added emphasis on creating a network for the future leaders. This blog provides a great forum for younger philanthropists to learn and exchange ideas.
Spare Change – “Making a difference with social marketing.”
There is no end to the list of blogs that claim to specialize in nonprofit marketing. Nedra Weinreich is the reigning champion, authoring Spare Change, a blog that specializes in social marketing for nonprofits. Honesty and sincerity shine through in her posts, right alongside expertise and knowledge. If you want both information and innovation for nonprofit marketing, you want Spare Change.
Rosetta Thurman – “Empowering a New Generation of Leaders.”
I also follow Rosetta Thurman on Twitter and love her insight on the nonprofit industry. Perhaps my favorite attribute of Thurman is her interactivity. She is always looking to respond, help, or converse with her followers. She embodies the true spirit of the nonprofit world, which is interest in the people.
